History

Greenville, Texas Habitat for Humanity, Inc ("Habitat") began in May, 1987. As an affiliate of HFHI, we are an independent, locally run non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization. Throughout the past 22 years Habitat has built 12 houses locally and through the Global Building Progam has funded the construction of 13 houses throughout the world.

Board members...

Habitat consist of 9 board members who meet monthly to address the issues of poverty and substandard housing in Greenville. Each member gives freely of their time and energy to make home ownership a reality for partner families.

How does it work...

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Habitat builds houses utilizing donations of materials and services, as well as financial contributions, from businesses, civic groups, faith organizations and individuals. Houses are then sold to qualifying partner families at no profit and through a no-interest mortgage. Payments are 'recycled' to help build new homes for more partner families. While homeowner mortgage payments contribute to the construction of a new house, it's by the generous support of local individuals and businesses which make it possible for Habitat to build a home.

Families

Families, also referred to as "Partner Families" are selected through a family selection process prior to any construction. Families whose income fall in the 25% to 60% range of the median income for our area are eligible to apply for home ownership. Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
1) Must be willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity
2) Must be able to repay a no-profit, no-interest mortgage.
3) Must have a Need* for decent, safe and affordable housing
*(Current conditions are unsafe, unsanitary, overcrowed etc.)

All criteria are reviewed and verified by Habitat, with NEED as the priority.
